Surfaced, Whiplash, Color Changing Deck and Silent Treatment

Send Products For Review Here As you know, each month I review a few products and give them a status of either Gem or Rubble (sometimes something in between). If you have (or know someone who has) a product you would like reviewed, please send it to: Stone Cold Magic Reviews 3367 South 6400 West West Valley, Utah 84128 I’ve got a pretty big stack, but I will make every effort to get the review out as soon as possible. How’s this for a weird set of reviews: 2 gems, one rubble and 1 that’s bot gem and rubble. Read [...]

Exchange Rate, Fast Company, Exit and Gafftastic

It looks like we’ve got a balance of 2 gems and 2 rubbles this round . . . not bad. Cameron Francis’s Exchange Rate Inc – Gem Damian Nieman’s Fast Company – Rubble Mickael Chatelain’s Exit – Rubble Liam Montier’s Gafftastic – gem Cameron Francis’s Exchange Rate (MSRP: $30.00) Random I-Tunes Song of The Moment: I’d Just Love to Lay You Down By Conway Twitty. You Don't Have a Camera? Really!?

Sometimes the short and the sweet articles end up being favorites of my loyal subscribers. Today I plan to test that theory. It’s simply this: I’ve seen a load of magic websites that a) look like crap, and b) have no video footage of the performer whatsoever. The Lecture Seriously!? You really don’t have any footage!? In today’s world, with smart phones, and inexpensive camera’s, there is no reason not to have footage on your site. Again, I’m speaking only to those who are seeking to land gigs and clients and to make some money. Obviously if you’re a hobbiest, [...]

Four Piles of Rubble You Don't Want to Miss

Man o’ Man . . . This gaggle of magic is one of the worst bunch I’ve reviewed. I’ve reviewed a ton of stuff over the years, and . . . well . . . just read it yourself . . . The Astral Shirt

Back in the day . . . like almost 100 years ago, Annemann published a monthly “thing” called The Jinx. It’s loaded with a ton of great info. Some of it is dated of course. But much of it is timeless. Including this piece from issue #6 (March 1935). Though your wardrobe might be slightly different, I think that the idea of being ready at any time to perform this is pretty clever. Enjoy The Astral Shirt in Annemann’s words right out of The Jinx: This is another one of those feats that will make talk when presented at the [...]

Blink, Blank, Fully Loaded, Illusions, I'm So Confused

Mark Mason’s Blink – grubble Craig Petty’s Blank – Grubble Gareth Shoulder’s Fully Loaded – Gem Alex Moffat’s Illusion Through Expectation (MSRP: $39.00) Random I-Tunes Song of The Moment: Burning Briges By Survivor Yes folks . . . they had more than one hit. So does Alex Moffat. His DVD Illusion Through Expectation is not just a clever title for a DVD; it’s also a solid mantra for the magi. This DVD, though a bit pricey, is loaded with gems. Let me get my complaints out [...]

Dedicated To The Art

What follows is a crazy idea that I’m clearly not expecting anyone to do. It’s an essay out of my upcoming book (Working Title: Brain Dump). It’s meant to be a thought exercise as is much of the material in the book. As you read the essay below, however, think of the possibilities. Think of how dedicated to your magic career are you. Are you willing to do what it takes to grow your business? Read some of the past No Stone Left Unturned Articles. Enjoy Dedicated To The Art When I read the Paul Harris trilogy, The Art of [...]

Attacked, Biten, Shived and Scorched

Yes folks this is the month of the violent reviews. We’ve got four reviews this month. Here’s the short story below. As usual, click on the link to read the details. Cameron Francis’s And David Forrest’s Attack of the Copper Silver Coin – gem Paul Gertner’s Bite Me – gem Andrew Mayne’s Stain Shiv – grubble Nopera Whitley’s Scorched – GEM! Audience vs. No Audience

Let me start by saying that this particular article will likely have a very narrow audience. Let me also remind you that this column (No Stone Left Unturned) is the section where we talk about the business side of magic, making money, getting more gigs, etc. That being said, the subject of this article is magic DVDs. I personally make money from magic in multiple ways: I Teach Magic to Local Students; I Do the Occasional Lecture to Magicians; I Perform the Occasional Gig (I don’t perform much these days); I Create and Sell my Ideas in the Form of [...]

Minimax Detector, Liquido, Rubik Predicted & Muscle Pass

I’m a wee bit disappointed in the final verdict on one of these.  Edo’s Minimax Detector (Gimmick and DVD) – rubble JP’s Liquido (Melting Coin) – rubble Mark Elsdon’s Rubik Predicted – Absolute and Total GEM! David Kong’s The Complete Muscle Pass – Gem Edo’s Minimax Detector (Gimmick and DVD) (MSRP: $99.00) Random I-Tunes Song of the Moment: Under Your Spell/Standing – Reprise From Buffy The Vampire Slayer Episode: Once More With Feeling No better song could be playing (at least no better album title) than this one. If you read the ad copy and watch the trailer, you are [...]

When to Charge

People often ask me the question, “How much should I charge?” Or “What’s a good rate/fee for a show?” etc. While that’s a great question, I think the more important question is “When should I charge?” What makes you think you should charge? Is your show worthy of payment? Are you worthy of payment? Stop and ask yourself these questions . . . better yet, ask someone else who will tell you the truth. I’ve always been frustrated by the person who buys a couple of tricks and then goes out and starts charging people to watch them play with [...]

Fair Enough

I want you to examine this deck of cards . . . fair enough? Now shuffle them up . . . fair enough? There are 52 cards in a deck and I want you to think of any card . . . any card that you want . . . fair enough? Really? Is that really necessary? Guys please stop saying that! I’ve heard just about every single magician that I’ve ever seen perform (live or on DVD) use that phrase. Even some really solid performers that I really respect. It’s extremely annoying and definitely overkill in my opinion. Especially, [...]

Imprompt-true

Party Goer: “Hey Jeff, show us a magic trick!”Jeff: “Oh . . . I can’t.”  Party Goer: “Why Not?” Jeff: “Because. I don’t have my Svengali deck, my sponge balls or my thumb tip . . . duh!” Party Goer: “Um . . . what are sponge balls? Is that anything like Tennis Elbow?” Jeff: “Um . . . No” Hopefully, I’m the only guy in the room who has experienced this. Unfortunately, I know that this just isn’t the case. Obviously nobody expects us to be real magicians and wield real powers. However, even an entertainer/fake magician with fake [...]

A Sleightly BioKinetic Toosh

Steve Haynes’s Toosh – Gem Berk Eratay’s BioKinesis – rem Cody Fisher’s Sleightly Original – GEM! Steve Haynes’s – Toosh (MSRP: $29.95) Random I-Tunes Song Of The Moment: You Could Be Mine By Guns-N-Roses I’ve gotta say . . . what better name for a magician who makes business cards appear under the spectator’s nether-regions than Haynes. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s consider a few components: DVD quality, gimmick quality, effect quality and instructional quality. DVD Quality: The menu navigation was excellent – finally. So many DVDs these days have issues in this department. The sound was mostly [...]
