The Year is 1995. The place is Kansas City. Carl Cloutier and I are among a handful of magicians from the North who have descended upon Stevens Magic emporium to shoot a two-volume video set called The Magic of Canada. The magnanimous Joe Stevens tries to make us feel more at home by serving maple syrup and being polite. It works – everyone’s in a great mood. During a break, Carl and I wander over to the vending machines, and while he’s dropping in coins, I’m toying with a deck of cards. Then I see the “insert dollar bills” slot [...]

Introduction by Jeff Stone I became aware of Oliver Meech early 2009 when he sent me a copy of his book The Plot Thickens to review. I was immediately impressed with the quality of the book as well as the material. What follows is a segment from his latest book, Plot Twists. I felt that the content was perfect for the Roots and Branches section of the magazine. After all, isn’t that what this column is ultimately about . . . taking a concept or principle and learning to apply it? Because we’re hearing it in Oliver’s own words, taken [...]

Hey everyone . . . It’s Pioneer Day in Utah, so why not celebrate World Wide instead of just here in the Beehive State. My Latest DVD, Stone Frixion Fire is kickin’ butt and takin’ names. In the August Issue of Genii Magazine, David Regal gave it a solid review. He had one complaint, however. He felt like I should have charged $35.00 (instead of $30.00) and included a Frixion Pen with the DVD. Maybe he’s right . . . so I’ll do one better. I’ll charge $25 – That’s $10.00 LESS than Regal suggested – and Include a Free [...]

Effect The Joker visually and instantly becomes the four Aces. – View Video Performance Performance Place the Joker face up on the table. Place all four Aces face up in the left hand in dealer’s grip, but hold a pinky break beneath the top two cards. Ask the spectator to cut the deck into two piles. You are going to apparently place all four Aces face down on top of the deck and complete the cut. But you’re actually going to perform a little move I call The Rolling Reversal: with your left little finger and ring finger on the [...]

When Jeff Stone e-mailed me to ask for a previously unpublished coin routine he could post on his website, I immediately thought of this card trick from my 2004 book, Random Acts of Magic. It’s completely impromptu, virtually sleight-free, and it fools magicians as thoroughly as it fries the paying public. To begin, spread the deck face down between your hands for a selection. Once a card has been chosen, square the pack into left-hand dealing position and direct the spectator to show his card to everyone as you turn around, presumably to avoid seeing it. During this brief moment [...]
Something From Nothing By Jeff Stone As you may recall, the Pillars of Stone column is a very random column. Unlike the other columns in this newsletter, there is no specific author assigned to this column. In fact, you could be the author… If you’ve got an idea or a rant you want to share with the magic fraternity, shoot me an email. This might be what you need. Meanwhile, while talking to my buddy Jay Sankey, he told me the following story. Here it is in his own words: While in touring in Germany several years ago I noticed [...]

The Magic Menu (MSRP: Vol. 1: $49.95, Vol. 2: $49.95, Vol. 3: $25.00) By Jim Sisti Back in the 90′s, what started as a small, obscure publication known as The Magic Menu, was destined to become the greatest resource for restaurant magicians. The magic menu ran for over a dozen years, and was retired some years back. This was headed up by Connecticut based magician, Jim Sisti. I own several of Jim’s products (including The Magic Menus), and have seen him lecture. Let me tell you, the guy knows restaurants. The Magic Menu contains essays, articles and stories by some [...]
