@ZDM – It all depends on the story, and how closely it relates. I’ve heard even some of the best pros babble on foolishly about stuff that had no relationship to the effect at hand. It’s all about relevance.

Probably the simple routine will get better effect. Maybe I am not a good story teller.

Not to mention I am still to figity getting the coins into the goshman pinch. Jay makes it look so easy…

@OZ – A lot of Jay’s earlier stuff was pretty hard core, and while you’re right, I wouldn’t call it a magician-fooler, it certainly was no where near as simple and down to earth as it is today. I love it. He has sooooooo many effects that just borrow an object and go. Not to mention his coin work is truly amazing and extremely technically demanding.

I think that is a good rule of thumb, simplicty is the key in most cases. Many critic of Jay Sankey say that many of his effects are too simple or dismiss them because they are not magician foolers. I almost never perform for magicians, simple easy to follow direct effects work the best. Sankey has a cut and restored straw effect on one of his DVDs called ‘Cut and Re-strawed’ I initially dismissed it due to its simplicity until I actually tried it. I got a good reaction, short and sweet. It is those type of experiences that make you re-think things.
