Effect:

A picture of a car with a flat tire magically changes to a picture of a repaired tire.

Method:

What you are about to read is right out of my e-book, Stone Frixion Fire. This is one of the many ideas you’ll find in this book. The book, for the unfamiliar, is entirely dedicated to ideas and effects that can be done with a Frixion® Pen – Heat Sensitive Ink. Frixion pens can be found at most office supply stores or at Staples Online. When heat is applied to the ink, it vanishes.

In the case of this method, Have the pre-drawn car on one side of a blank business card stock using regular ink (represented in blue). After the ink dries, adjust the car to show the flat tire as in the photograph below using frixion ink (represented in red). Of course, you’ll want to use the same color for both regular and frixion ink. On the other side of the business card have the words “Apply Heat” printed or written in regular ink.

Frixion Magic

Notes:

Most stationary stores carry business card paper that you can use to create business cards on your computer. You can use Avery template 8371 as one example.

Go to Avery’s website and you can actually use their online templates to print out your own business cards.

I don’t recommend making your personal business cards this way. However, making Joe Slick the Tire Salesman’s business card is just fine (see presentation below).

You can make it simple and just put “Apply Heat” on the one side, or you can go all out and print his name, phone number, etc. Finally, hand-draw the car on the back of the card.

Fix a Flat Presentation

I recently ran into a tire salesman. He gave me this business card.

Show the “Apply Heat” side of the card.

He claims that they have a new kind of tire that can heal itself, if it ever becomes flat, by simply applying heat.

Show the other side of the card that has the picture of the car and flat tire on it.
He said that this card was proof of his outrageous claim.

Turn the card face down and show the “Apply Heat” side face-up. Then directly apply the flame of a lighter to the car picture. Then turn it over to “see if it worked.”

I don’t believe it. It worked!

Introduction

Of all the Frixion Stuff that I do, this has to be one of the coolest. The best part is that it’s not just a “trick.” It’s a concept . . . one that you can apply in your own way.

Preliminaries

For the unfamiliar, you must first know a couple of things. The Frixion Pen (a product of the Pilot Pen company) is a temperature sensitive pen. When the ink is heated, it vanishes. When the ink is cooled, it reappears. It’s like magic. These pens are available at Staples, and other stationary stores. They’re also available at Stone Cold Magic.

Basic Effect/Concept/Method

In the Stone Frixion Fire e-book, one of the many concepts discussed is what I call  Evanescence Effects. These are effects where a drawing of an object becomes real. It comes to life.  The method is simply to draw a small object with Frixion ink (for example a dime). Then have a dime (see Money to Burn in the July 2009 issue) preloaded into a piece of flash paper. Place the flash paper onto the drawing of the dime. Light the flash paper. The drawing and flash paper vanish. You’re left only with the dime on a blank piece of paper.

Many presentational angles for this concept are discussed in the e-book. However, one of my favorite presentations of this concept is to draw an object on a piece of paper and ask someone, “Do you know what this is?” When she says “no,” I pull out a piece of flash paper (object hidden inside) and place it on the drawing. I ask again (this time about the flash paper), “Do you know what this is?”

When the answer “no” comes again, I then light the paper, and the object reveals itself. I ask one final time, “Do you know what that is?”

She’ll always say, “Yes” with a look of astonishment on her face.

The objects I’ll most likely use for this are listed below in no particular order:

  • Paper clip
  • Soda Pop Can Tab
  • Rubber Band
  • Tie Tack

You have not lived until you’ve done this with a rubber band. When I draw a rubber band and ask “Do you know what this is,” people have no idea. Once the flash paper, with the hidden rubber band, is lit on fire, the rubber band which was previously balled up un-balls and expands in the flame. It’s a fantastic visual! See the photo below for a look at some of the drawings I might create on the paper.

Do You Know What This Is? Free Frixion Magic

The photo above shows how the drawings might look. They don’t have to be fancy. Of course, given the “Do you know what this is” presentation I use, I would not actually write the word next to the drawing as I’ve done in the photo above. That is for your clarification only. Also, I would never do multiple drawings on one sheet of paper. I would only draw one on the back of my business card or on a piece of paper using a camouflaged Frixion® pen.

For more great Frixion ideas like the one above, check out the Stone Frixion Fire E-book.

It’s on sale for only $9.95 until November 12, 2010.

You can also pick up Frixion pens as well as Frixion Kits at Stone Cold Magic.

I had a chance to watch your DVD today . . . would you consider letting me write one up for Genii magazine? At the moment, I’m thinking of “Burnin’ Time.”

Cameron is Such a Nice Guy; You Should Give Him Money

Over the years I’ve known Cameron Francis, I’ve really come to like and respect him as a smart, funny and downright nice guy. This month isn’t the first time he’s contributed to this rag. With his recent release of his e-book, Moment’s Notice 3, I asked him for permission to include an effect from it, and he instantly said “Not on your life!”

Then I beat the crap out of him and through a bloody face and broken jaw, he mumbled “amfakl afh90ashf n afs.”  –  I told you it was a mumble! My interpreter said that Cameron was giving me permission to use one of his effects. So lucky for you, but not so much for Mr. Francis, this month you get is excellent effect, Uppers, so help the guy out . . . he needs money to pay his medical bills after I got done “asking” him to use one of his effects.

You can get the entire e-book for only $12 bucks on his site, Plus you can watch a video of him performing Uppers. Enjoy!

Brand New DVD!

You heard right folks . . . A Frixion DVD. My E-Book, Stone Frixion Fire, is by far and away the all time best selling Stone Cold Magic product, so we’ve decided to do a Frixion DVD. My consultants and I have been experimenting over the past several months, and we’ve got a ton of killer new ideas. There are even a couple of breakthroughs in how the ink can be used that nobody else has thought of (that I know of . . . up to this point). We’re hitting the studio this Friday (2/5/10). For those unaware, Frixion Pens are pens that have temperature sensitive ink. There are a million things you can do with that concept. In the E-Book, I share about 30 or so ideas. This month’s free trick, (Fri)X(ion)Marks The Spot is taken right from the Stone Frixion Fire E-Book.

Like Gemstones, this DVD will also have a dedicated website that gives you access to updates and further ideas. Trust me folks, this is one you won’t want to miss!

Gemstones Site

Speaking of the Gemstones Site, I’ve completely updated it. This is a site that’s free for anyone who has purchased the Gemstones DVD. The DVD comes with the password, so you don’t have to buy it from Stone Cold Magic. You can get it anywhere, and you’ll have full access to the site. I’ve streamlined and clarified the login process. I’ve updated the Visa 2.0 prop download and a few other things. Check it out gang. If you don’t already have Gemstones, get it!

Facelift

Stone Cold Magic Magazine is currently going through an overhaul. I’ve been working day and night on some back-end streamlining, and part of that will necessitate a change in the layout and design of the site. So I figure if you’re gonna go, why not go big. Thus, the February 2010 issue of Stone Cold Magic Magazine will be the first volume with the completely brand new look. Be excited . . .

Meat Blog

On a totally unrelated note . . . completely non-magical . . . if you’ve ever struggled with losing weight, then you might be interested in following my daily journal of my dietary adventures. I’m keeping a daily log of my success/failure on the Atkins Diet. Check it out here and please feel free to post comments: Eat Meat and Live.
Enjoy the rest of the issue!

I really can’t believe I’m doing this. What you are about to read is right out of my latest e-book, Stone Frixion Fire.

Effect:
A piece of crumpled up “tissue” paper is placed on top of a drawing of a dime. The paper is lit on fire and bursts into flames. When the flames clear, the drawing has vanished, and in its place is an actual tangible dime.

Method:
The dime is hidden inside the crumpled up piece of “tissue” Paper (aka Flash Paper). The drawing is Frixion® ink. The end.

Setup:
Have pre-drawn on the back of your business card (or any piece of paper) three coins. Just simple circles with the value written in will suffice. I use a quarter, dime and nickel. See photo to the below.

Money To BurnThe dime, of course, is drawn with Frixion® ink, and the other two coins are not.

Keep in mind that I am using two different colors only to represent the Frixion® (red) and non-Frixion® (blue) ink. In real performance, all ink (Frixion® and non-Frixion®) will be the same color.

Have a dime wadded up inside a piece of flash paper. This is harder than you might think. You want the flash paper to look like a ball. If you’re not careful, it’ll end up looking exactly like what it is: a piece of paper with a dime in it.

You don’t want the bottom of the wad to be flat. For this, I’ll sometimes use two sheets of flash paper or a piece torn from the larger sheets. Flash paper is a bit translucent. You don’t want to be able to see the color or the shape of the dime. The wad of paper occasionally wants to “un-wad” itself. To prevent this, you can use the tiniest bit of magician’s wax to hold things together.

Money to Burn Presentation

Script: You’ve probably all heard the expression, ‘I’ve got money to burn,’ Right?

Action: Wait for response.

Script: Well, that’s me . . . Mr. Money to Burn! In fact, I’ll prove it.

Action: Pull out the business card with the drawings on it.

Script: I’ve got three coins here. Put your right index finger on one of the coins.

Action: If he puts it on the dime, great; if not, then say:

Script: Now place your left index finger on another one.

Action: If he doesn’t put it on the dime then it’s perfect. You place the wad of paper down on the dime and have him remove his fingers. If he covers the dime on the second round, then you say:

Script: You’re covering two coins. In a moment, on instinct, I want you to remove one of your fingers and place it behind your back.

Action: If he uncovers the dime, great, put the flash paper on it and have him remove his other hand. If he uncovers the non-dime, then that will leave him with one finger on the dime. You then say:

Script: Great, we’ll use the one you’ve selected. Lift up your finger so I can burn it.

Action: The above is yet another laugh moment. Place the flash paper on the dime.

Script: I’m glad you chose the dime. I can’t afford to burn much more than that. Of course this dime is burnable because it’s paper.

Action: Light the flash paper.

Script: But a real dime, made of metal, cannot burn.

Action: Time the above words with the appearance of the dime. Be prepared for a moment of deep astonishment!

Notes:
The reason I put the dime in the middle is because it’s the most likely place that the spectator will put his finger on the first shot. However, if on the first shot, one of the outer coins is touched, the likelihood that the other “outer” coin will be touched with the other finger increases.

Regarding the loading of the flash paper, rather than laying the dime flat in the paper, having the dime on its edge in the flash paper will cause it to fall over once the flash paper vanishes. This gives the illusion of the drawing truly coming to life . . . much more of that proverbial oomph.

Presentational Points
By Wesley James

If the denominations were penny, nickel, dime, with the dime in the middle, the likelihood of the dime being selected would increase because it would also be the highest denomination coin.

If you’re willing to work a bit harder you could tear off and crumble up a piece of tissue paper that looks like flash paper and switch it for your prepared piece of flash paper with the dime inside.

Please Take a Moment to Reply To and “like” This Effect.

With the help of Diamond Jim and a few others, my effect Spectral Chill from my Stone Cold Magic DVD has been launched into a new orbit. I’ll be releasing this as its own E-Book this summer. For those of you who’ve tried Spectral Chill, you know that this effect truly freaks people out. It gives people the chills, hence the name.

Multiply whatever impact you’ve had with this routine by 10, and you might start to scratch the surface of what’s been done to this concept.

Gemstones Site Update

For the few of you who haven’t jumped on board yet and ordered Gemstones, you’re missing out. I’ve completely overhauled the DVD companion site for Gemstones. Not only have I overhauled it, but there are a ton of killer ideas from:

  • Jay Sankey
  • Wesley James
  • Liam Montier
  • Donny Orbit
  • Brad Gordon
  • Darrin Cook
  • Joe Diamond

Just to name a few. If you don’t own Gemstones, what the heck are you waiting for! If you already own it, then you already have access to the free site!

20 Free Copies of Envisage: Three Visionary Possibilities

My good friend Brad “Scarnecky” Gordon has authorized me (after a lot of begging) to give away 20 free copies of his latest E-Book, Envisage. All you’ve got to do to get one is order something off of Stone Cold Magic. That’s it. If you order anything, you’ll have an option to download Envisage. Check out the contents:

Toddler Pack

An idea which breathes versatility to its fullest. Imagine a pack of cards which has been destroyed by a toddler and then being able to still perform a miracle or two. This concept expands WAY above suspicion, allowing you to do things generally out of reach with a normal pack of playing cards.

Reveal Your Design

Originally structured to NOT really be a “trick” at all. Five different blue backed cards (with completely different back designs) are removed and displayed as keep sakes to remind you of your card trick days. One is freely pointed out by your participant, and a warm explanation of that particular back design and how it connects to your spectator is given. Simple, direct, a very stress free ice breaker to be sure.

Wallet Readings

Has impact written all over it. You are having dinner with a small group of people. A chance meeting with a stranger prompts you to remove your wallet which contains a folded piece of paper with her initials written on it. She opens it to find a distinctive reading which has been waiting for her safely tucked away in your wallet for years.

693 (Windfall)

This is a completely out your hands experiment where your spectator does all of the work. After isolating one card completely free of choice, you the magician still manage to successfully predicted the outcome. I have fooled my fellow conjurers with this one.

Positive Dollar (Windfall)

If you happen to be a fan of the effect Positive Negative by Max Maven, this utility item should be immediately added to your wallet. Warning, you will need to have a previous understanding of Positive Negative as it is respectfully not explained in this book.

Luck of Astonishment (Windfall)

Based on the delightful effect Shape of Astonishment by Paul Harris, this little addition to a quarter will add a whole new dimension to this plot. Again you must have a previous understanding of Shape of Astonishment to understand this bonus idea.

You don’t want to miss this. After 20 free copies, it’s over. Update: 7/22/09 – Sorry gang. These have been gone for a while now.
Enjoy the rest of the newsletter!
