Effect:

You explain to the spectator how in some modern books and films they show you the ending first, and then the whole book builds up to that ending. To keep up with modern times, you have decided to create a card trick based on that principle. Firstly, you show the ending. To do this, you make the two red aces appear, and place an invisible prediction in between. With that done, you vanish the red aces and say that they will be brought back to the story when it is the end again. “Now for the beginning.”

You get the spectator to pick a card, and it is lost into the pack. This has built up to the end, you explain and to show the ending again you produce the Red Aces. “However, I cheated a little bit. I didn’t show you the very last bit of the ending, where the invisible prediction turns visible!” With those words, a card appears between the Aces, and it is the selection!

Time out For this Station Break

Note From the Editor:

Dessert First Comes from Kyle MacNeill’s new magazine, Card Shark.

You can find Card Shark at Lybrary.com.

Each issue is an instant download and contains a handful of effects from multiple contributors (e.g. Cameron Francis, Peter Duffie, John Holt and many others).

The best part is that each issue ranges between $.99 and $2.80.

Check it out Folks.

Method:

I have been trying this out recently, and spectators seem to really connect with the trick’s hook. Okay, so you will need a little set up – a top face down indifferent card, followed by the two face up red aces and then the rest of the pack face down.

Talk about showing the ending first, and then explain that you will show them now. Perform the Erdnase/Houdini colour change to materialize the first red ace. Take this red ace off the pack, and give it a flourishy twirl of some sort, to show it to be a standard card. As you do this, push the top card off the deck over and acquire a pinkie break underneath this top card.

Place the face up red ace square on top of the deck. Give a snap of the fingers and dig your right thumb into the break (your hand is palm down) and place your right fingers on top of the top card. Using the pressure from your thumb, draw your hand backwards sliding the double as one into an injogged position. A second ace will show. Feign taking an invisible prediction, and pretend to place this invisible card in between the aces.

Now explain that you will get back to these protagonists later. With these words, slide the double back square onto the pack, and then slide a single card back, injogged. This vanishes the first Ace using Roy Walton’s brilliant Paintbrush Change. To vanish the second ace, slide the ace back square onto the pack, and perform another Erdnase change to vanish this Ace. Perform all these actions very smoothly and make them flow.

Now explain that you will show the ‘beginning’ of the story. Cut the deck, retaining a pinkie break between the two halves, and perform a simple Riffle Force to the break. To do this, riffle your left thumb down the pack and ask a spectator to call out stop. Regardless of where they stopo you, cut all the cards above the break. Bring the (lower) left hand portion up to a vertical position, so that it is necktied (faces towards spectator backs to you). Using your left thumb, push the top card of the left hand portion to the right, and ask the spectator to remember this card. When they have remembered it, push the card back square with your left thumb.

Bring the squared portion to the usual flat level, and place the right hand packet on top, retaining a break. Double undercut or pass to the break, so that the Ace stock is back on top.

Now explain that you will show them the ending again, as the build up has just occurred.. You will now do nearly the same process as before:

Perform the Erdnase/Houdini colour change to materialize the first red ace. Take this red ace off the pack, and give it a flourishy twirl of some sort, to show it to be a standard card. As you do this, push the top card off the deck over and acquire a pinkie break underneath this top card.

Place the face up red ace square on top of the deck. Give a snap of the fingers and dig your right thumb into the break (your hand is palm down) and place your right fingers on top of the top card. Using the pressure from your thumb, draw your hand backwards sliding the double as one into an injogged position. A second ace will show.

Now for the change. Take the injogged double off the deck in right hand biddle grip, and place it sidejogged to the right on top of the top card. Take off the side jogged double with the other ace, and hold them in a pinch grip. Explain that you cheated a little – you didn’t show them the last few seconds of the ending. And what happens? The invisible prediction turns visible! To your words, shake the cards and spread them simultaneously. One card will visually appear, and show it to be the selected card! A visual and commercial routine for stand up performances, I hope you enjoy it!

Review By McBride Magic TVLarry Hass Reviews Stone Frixion Fire

At this point, you’re probably aware (since I announced it in a separate email) that Larry Hass, Ph.D. gave a glowing review of my Frixion book. You can view that review by clicking on the video icon. In honor of his glowing review I’m offering a 33% discount on the e-book that expires this Wednesday (9/14/11). Check it out here: Stone Frixion Fire

Brain Dump

Currently the working title on my latest book project is Brain Dump. It’s a fitting title certainly and was suggested to me by my friend and fellow magi when I told him that this book was basically a brain dump of all of my mentalism, mind, psychology ideas in my journals. He replied with, “that’s a good name for the book.”

He’s probably right. However, if you’ve got a better title, I’m all ears. Post your titles suggestions in the comment box below. If I use your title you’ll get a free copy of the book when it’s done. It’s coming along nicely. I’ve got a ton of writing done. The hope is to release the book mid to late fall. Right now, the only plans are to release it as an e-book.

Other Projects

Likely, “Brain Dump” will be the only other release (besides Tarot Below Zero) this year. However, I’ve got a few things in the works for next year. I’ll keep you posted as things progress. I’ve got a couple of other non-magic books that I’m co-authoring as well. One is sort of magic related . . . it’s a magic-centric novel. Additionally I’m working on a co-author quasi-religious series of books and a solo authoring of another quasi-religious book. Those three non-magic projects will take me into next year for sure.

Reviews

Many of you visit this site strictly for the reviews. I’ve developed quite the reputation out there of not being afraid to speak the truth no matter whose feelings I hurt. I should just point out, briefly, that my intentions are not to hurt feelings, only give the truth. If my rhetoric has been insulting I truly am sorry. I’m just seeking the truth and offering you loyal readers some guidance on where you spend your hard-earned money. More recently I’ve been very careful attempting to be more diplomatic toward the creator (not the creation). I’ve adopted the love the sinner, not the sin kind of attitude.

If any of you out there are creators, and would like your material reviewed on the site I’ll happily add you to the stack of stuff, and because you’re a loyal reader, I’ll bump your products to the top of the list . . . and it’s a darn big list by the way, so if you’ve recently released something and want a review relatively quickly, let me know.

You can mail the product here:

I had a chance to watch your DVD today . . . would you consider letting me write one up for Genii magazine? At the moment, I’m thinking of “Burnin’ Time.”
– David Acer (Genii Magazine)

Ive already watched the performance section and was blown away. I never realized how powerful these things can be. My head is already spinning with ideas and ways to use them.
– Brandon S.

I just got done with . . . Stone Frixion Fire.  WOW! You and your cohorts are some creative guys, there are some great ideas there, it really has my wheels turning.
– Jay Best

Gemstones:

I’ve been a big Jeff Stone fan for a while now. Not only is he a good friend, he creates powerful, direct and -most of all- commercial close-up magic. I also really respect Jeff as a teacher. He really knows what he’s talking about. ‘GEMSTONES’ is the perfect opportunity to get to know Jeff and learn how his very clever mind ticks!
– Jay Sankey

Got this yesterday and took a look at it this morning. One word: COMMERCIAL! Really good stuff on here. My personal faves were Quarterback, Doctoring Daley & Safe Key Ping. All stuff I could see myself doing. Another one I like as well! When working for lay folk, I only do coin stuff that’s easy to do and easy to follow. Misrer’s Nightmare truly fits the bill. Pick it up!
– Cameron Francis

Every single trick on it is worth practicing and performing, I think my favorite effect on there is probably Quasi-Photo, I can’t wait to practice it. I can really tell you put a whole lot of thought into this project.
– David M

Stone Cold Magic:

If you are looking for a fresh dose of commercial, audience-tested card magic, look no further than Jeff Stone’s Stone Cold Magic. There’s plenty of useable card effects presented in a wonderfully friendly, casual and straightforward manner.

My only criticism is that Jeff came up with the idea of using the Erdnase-Houdini Color Change as an invisible palm. It looks so darn good, I wish to heck I had thought of it!!
– Jay Sankey

Jeff is a real worker and tips his mitt in this DVD. There are some great ideas that are really USABLE. In addition, it’s just a fun watch as noted by others. Jeff is really a funny guy. I enjoyed the DVD a lot.

Hey everyone . . . It’s Pioneer Day in Utah, so why not celebrate World Wide instead of just here in the Beehive State.

My Latest DVD, Stone Frixion Fire is kickin’ butt and takin’ names.

In the August Issue of Genii Magazine, David Regal gave it a solid review. He had one complaint, however. He felt like I should have charged $35.00 (instead of $30.00) and included a Frixion Pen with the DVD.

Maybe he’s right . . . so I’ll do one better. I’ll charge $25 – That’s $10.00 LESS than Regal suggested – and Include a Free Frixion Pen!

Just use this coupon when ordering Stone Frixion Fire and you’ll get 5 Bucks off plus a free Black Frixion Pen! You’ll also get a free pad of Flash Paper!

I dove into the [Frixion] DVD a little bit last night. Awesome stuff, man …Very well put together and thought out …I just love the “review” of past peoples’ work with Frixion pens …that was good …gobs of good bonus material …whatever you charge won’t be enough!!”

Working with Jeff on Underground was a treat. He’s a real pro with a great sense of humor. I also really respect his knowledge of card magic. A serious student. – Jay Sankey

Jeff Stone has two killer vanishes on there, and “Jacked Up” is a great routine.– Cameron Francis

Jeff Stone is an excellent performer and thinker and it shows on this DVD – Chris Kavanaugh

“Jacked Up” is an easy yet mind-blowing find the aces (or jacks) with a color changing deck climax. I find that Jeff Stone is my favorite contributor. He has great ideas, including a novel key routine with a killer vanish. His use of the film cannister really got me thinking, and it’s the thought-provoking ideas that make DVD’s worthwhile to me, the sort of thinking that has you digging up props because an idea (or several) just occurred to you. – Darrin Cook

Jeff’s work is STUNNING!!! It overshadows the others. Jeff is the star of the show in my opinion. – Kip Stevens

Order Now and you get an instant download of the performance for each effect, the Explanation video downloads for each effect, plus three bonus videos:

The original audition footage I sent to Jay:

Cameron is Such a Nice Guy; You Should Give Him Money

Over the years I’ve known Cameron Francis, I’ve really come to like and respect him as a smart, funny and downright nice guy. This month isn’t the first time he’s contributed to this rag. With his recent release of his e-book, Moment’s Notice 3, I asked him for permission to include an effect from it, and he instantly said “Not on your life!”

Then I beat the crap out of him and through a bloody face and broken jaw, he mumbled “amfakl afh90ashf n afs.”  –  I told you it was a mumble! My interpreter said that Cameron was giving me permission to use one of his effects. So lucky for you, but not so much for Mr. Francis, this month you get is excellent effect, Uppers, so help the guy out . . . he needs money to pay his medical bills after I got done “asking” him to use one of his effects.

You can get the entire e-book for only $12 bucks on his site, Plus you can watch a video of him performing Uppers. Enjoy!

Taken from Moment’s Notice 3 . . .

Inspired by Ed Marlo’s Elevator plot

Effect:

The magician removes the four Kings from the deck and sets them aside. Two cards are then selected and lost in the deck.

Three of the Kings are then fairly placed into three different parts of the pack. The last king is placed on top of the deck. All four Kings instantly rise to the top. One of the Kings is again placed on top of the deck.

The other three are placed under the spectator’s hand. The magician waves the deck over the spectator’s hand. The top four cards of the deck are turned over and are seen to be the four Kings. The spectator lifts her hand and discovers that there are only two cards on the table; the two selections!

Performance:

  1. Run through the deck and up jog the four Kings. Strip them out, arrange them in alternating color order, and place them face up on top of the face down deck.
  2. Spread over the Kings and the two face down cards under them. Square everything up, catching a break under all seven cards.
  3. Lift up all six cards from above in right hand Biddle Grip. Clamp down on the top card with your left thumb and move the packet to the right. Use the left long edge of the packet to lever the King face down on top of the deck. Repeat this with the next King. Drop the remaining four cards on top of the deck and then flip the top two Kings face down.
  4. Take the top four cards into your right hand, without reversing their order, and drop them in a spread onto the table. So on the table are two Kings on top of two indifferent cards. The other two Kings are on top of the deck.
  5. Holding the deck face down, spread the cards and have two selected. Kick cut the top half of the deck into your left hand and have one of the cards replaced on this half. Place the right hand portion on top, maintaining a break, and then undercut half the packet to the top of the deck.
  6. Lift up all of the cards above the break and have the second selection placed on top of the left hand portion. Place the right hand portion on top and then perform a double under cut. This brings both selections to the top of the pack.
  7. With your right hand, slide out the bottom card of the four card spread on the table. Riffle your left thumb down the deck to just below center and slip this card into the break, saying, “We’ll place this King near the bottom of the deck…”
  8. Now pick up the top card of the three card packet on the table. Flash the face to the spectators and as you do, secure a Tilt break under the top card of the deck.
  9. Slip the King into the Tilt break, saying, “This King goes about in the middle…” Release the break.
  10. Slide out the bottom card of the two remaining on the table (Another indifferent card). Riffle your left thumb about a quarter way down from the top and insert this card into the break, saying, “One goes nearer to the top…” Release the break and square up the pack.
  11. Pick up the last card, flash its face to the spectators and say, “And finally, the last card goes on top of all.”
  12. You have apparently placed four Kings into four different parts of the deck.
  13. Snap your fingers three times over the deck. Hold the deck from above in right hand Biddle Grip. With your left thumb, slowly peel the top four cards one at a time into your left hand. As you do this, secure a pinky break between the second and third cards (Fig. 1).
  14. Put the deck on the table.
  15. You will now perform a Larry Jennings Rhythm Count to apparently show four Kings.
  16. Cameron Francis's Uppers - Figure 1Say, “These aren’t just any four cards. You see, the top one is a King…” Perform a double turnover Showing a King. Turn the double face down and deal the top card to the table.

“This one is also a King…” Slip the top card of the packet into your right hand and then rotate your left hand palm down so they see the bottom card of the packet.

Rotate your left hand palm up and as you display the face of the King in your right hand, deal the top card of the left hand packet on top of the card already on the table, saying, “So is this one…”

Finally snap over the remaining card in your left hand to reveal another King as you say, “And this one as well!”

Drop the last card on top of all.

  17. Pick up the packet and secure a break under the top two cards. With your right hand, pick up the top two cards as one, flash the face and place them face down on top of the deck. saying, “We’ll try it again but this time we’ll make it more difficult.”
  18. Perform an Edward Victor EYE Count (2 as 3 count) to show the two cards in your hands as three.
  19. Place this packet of cards in front of the spectator and ask her to place her hand on top of the three Kings. These cards are really the two selections.
  20. Secure a break under the top four cards of the deck.
  21. Perform Looy Simonoff’s Flipant Move to flip the Kings face up on top of the deck. For those of you who don’t know the Flipant Move, here’s the basic idea: Hold a break under the top four cards of the deck. In one quick, sharp motion, move your left arm down a few inches and then move it back up. This is done very fast so that the air catches the cards above the break. When done correctly, the four cards will flip over on top of the deck.
  22. This done, spread the cards to show the four Kings are now on top of the deck.
  23. Have the spectator lift her hand and turn over the cards on the table to reveal the two selections.

Note From Jeff:

Cameron has been more than generous with his material in the past, and so it’s no surprise that he was willing to give up a free effect to Stone Cold Magic Magazine subscribers, so please take a moment to check out his e-book, Moment’s Notice, where this effect originates. Also, while you’re there you can actually see a video of Cameron performing Uppers. The e-book is only $12.00 and is definitely worth it!

Cameron FrancisEffect:
Three cards are selected and lost in the pack. The four kings are introduced. “The kings will attempt to find your cards,” he explains. “However the red kings and black kings are very competitive and are constantly trying to outdo each other. So this should be interesting!” The spectator is asked to name either the red or black kings. Let’s say the black kings are named.

The red kings are placed aside and the black kings are cut face down into the face up deck. When the deck is spread, one card is seen trapped between them, the first selection. The black kings did well. But not to be outdone, the red kings are waved over the deck. Nothing appears to have happened. Until hey are flipped over and seen to have transformed into the other two selections! This effect is completely impromptu.

Explanation:
Start by shuffling the deck. Have three spectators each select a card. Control the three selections to the top of the pack.

Turn the deck face up and spread through as you mention that all three cards are lost somewhere in the deck. As you do this, spread to the top of the deck and glimpse the three selections. If they are all spot cards, you will use the kings. If one or more is a king, use either the queens, jacks or aces.

http://www.stonecoldmagicmagazine.com/images/august-2008/figure-1.jpg

In this example, let’s say they are all spot cards (we’ll us the Ace, Two and Three of Hearts for explanation purposes). Close the face up spread, catching a pinky break above the bottom two cards as you do (fig. 1).

http://www.stonecoldmagicmagazine.com/images/august-2008/figure-2.jpgThese cards are two of the selections. Half pass the bottom two cards (this turns them face down) as you talk about the competitive kings. Figure 2 shows the half-pass half way complete.

http://www.stonecoldmagicmagazine.com/images/august-2008/figure-3.jpgFigure 3 shows an exposed view of the position of the cards… two face down selections (Ace of Hearts, Two of Hearts) and face up selection (Three of hearts). Followed by the rest of the deck. The deck should be squared and held face up in the left hand’s dealer grip. Figure 3 is exposed just for explanation purposes.

http://www.stonecoldmagicmagazine.com/images/august-2008/figure-4.jpgStart to spread through the pack and up jog the kings as you come to them. Strip them out and arrange them so that the packet reads from the face down: black king, black king, red king, red king (fig 4). Flip the packet face down and place it under the deck. Turn the deck face down.

http://www.stonecoldmagicmagazine.com/images/august-2008/figure-5.jpgPosition Check (fig 5):

  • Deck in your left hand dealer’s grip
  • Face up black king
  • Below that another face up black king
  • Below that face up red king
  • Below that another face up red king
  • Below that, face up selection
  • Below that, another face up selection
  • Below that, face down selection
  • Below that, face down deck.

http://www.stonecoldmagicmagazine.com/images/august-2008/figure-6.jpgLift up the top seven (6 face up and 1 face down) cards from above in right hand overhand grip (often incorrectly referred to as “biddle grip”). Obtain a right thumb break above the bottom (the only face down card in the packet) card in the packet (fig. 6).

You will now perform a variation of Ed Marlo’s ATFUS:
With your left thumb, peel the top face up black king onto the face down deck. Release the face down card from beneath the packet as you peel the next black king on top of the deck, thus sandwiching the first selection between the black kings. Peel the third king onto the deck, keeping a break under it with your left pinky. Drop the final king and the two selections (as if they were only one card) on top of all.

http://www.stonecoldmagicmagazine.com/images/august-2008/figure-7.jpg

Turn your left hand palm down and deposit the four cards (two selections between two red kings, apparently all four kings) above the break face down on the table.Give the face up deck a cut.

http://www.stonecoldmagicmagazine.com/images/august-2008/figure-8.jpg

The sandwiched selection is now in the center of the pack. You’ll find that because you just dropped off the four cards on the table, are holding the deck in your left hand palm down. It becomes very natural to cut the deck as shown in figure 7 and 8.

Pick up the top face down card of the packet and use it to scoop up the other three cards. This places both kings on the bottom of the packet.

Take the top two cards in your right hand (selections, but apparently the black kings) and the bottom two in your left hand. Ask the spectator, “Which do you prefer, the black kings or the red kings?”

If he says black, say, “Okay, then we’ll set the red kings aside for now and use your black kings…”

If he says red, say, “Okay, then we’ll set your red kings right here on the table…”

Reassemble the packet with the left hand cards going under the right hand cards. Perform the first half of Bro. John Hamman’s Gemini Count, revealing two red kings which are apparently placed off to the side.

The count will be as follows:

  1. Buckle the bottom card with the left index finger (fig. 9 shows and upside down exposed view)
  2. Slide the top card to the left with the left thumb (fig. 10)
  3. Grab a double from the middle with the right hand (fig. 10)
  4. Flip the double over on top of the packet showing a red king
  5. Turn the double face down and place the selection (apparently a king) face down on the table
  6. Next, repeat steps 2-5 (grabbing a double from the bottom rather than the middle) (fig. 11)

http://www.stonecoldmagicmagazine.com/images/august-2008/figure-9.jpg http://www.stonecoldmagicmagazine.com/images/august-2008/figure-10.jpg http://www.stonecoldmagicmagazine.com/images/august-2008/figure-11.jpg

In reality, the situation is that there are now two face down cards on the table which the spectators believe to be the red kings but are actually two of the selections, and two face down cards in your hand which they believe to be the black kings but are actually the red kings.

Place the two face down cards in your hand (red kings) on top of the face up deck and double under cut them to the bottom, being careful not to cut into the packet of black kings already in the deck, as you say, “So we’ll send the black kings down into the deck to find the first card…:”

Give the deck a riffle and spread it showing that one of the selections is now trapped between two face down cards. Be careful not to spread too far so as not to reveal the two reversed cards at the bottom of the deck. Remove this sandwich and turn the two black kings face up, keeping the selection sandwiched between them. Place the face up sandwich on the table. All seems fair.

Pick up the two face down cards on the table and say, “Now the black kings did pretty well. But the red kings refuse to be shown up.. All I have to do is gently rub them against the deck… And they actually turn into the two other selections!”

Match your actions to words as you say the above, snapping the cards over to reveal the other two selections at the end.

To clean up, spread through the face up deck, turn half of it face down and place it under the other half. Spread through the rest of the face up cards and flip them face down on top of the face down cards.

Newsletter Facelift:
For the loyalists out there, you may notice a few minor modifications to the “look and feel” of the newsletter site. Let me just briefly cover those:

  • Sidebar: In the side bar you will find a handful of items in this order from top down: Donation button, Search Box, Articles organized by column (rather than by monthly issue), Articles organized by monthly issue. Below you find greater detail about each feature.
    • Searching: As many have noted, the search feature was broken. It is now functioning just groovy. Just type in the word or phrase you want, and a list of every article containing that phrase will show up on the left. Sorry about it being broken so long.
    • Donations: I love doing this newsletter, and apparently many of you enjoy it as well, so thank you! The donation button on the top of the sidebar is there for anyone feeling generous. Any donations to offset the costs of the web hosting and the email service are greatly appreciated.
    • Columns: You will also note that near the top of the side bar you will find a “folder” for each of the columns for each month. This groups all free tricks together from all issues, all reviews from all issues, all Roots and Branches articles, etc. By clicking on one of the column names on the right, the left side of the screen will be populated with each of the monthly articles. You can also just expand the folder by clicking the “plus” sign.
    • Monthly: You may notice that the side bar navigation is a bit different. It’s now listed two different ways. For the purest who wants to be able to view each month as its own entity, you’ve still got it. On the bottom of the side bar, you can still select the year, then month, then the articles that you would like to read.
  • Ratings: At the end of each article and free trick, you will find a place to “like” the article or trick on a scale from 1 to 5. All you have to do is click. It takes no time. The intent is to make long term adjustments based on what you, the reader like the most. All of the previous articles and tricks have a rating “section” as well, so if you’re feeling frisky, you can go back and “like” some of the previous issues. Either way, please make sure you “like” the current and future articles and tricks. It’s just a single click and you’re done. Thank You!
  • Printing: By popular demand, you will find that there is now a “printer friendly” version of articles and free tricks. Right above the column name on the left just below the “feet” of the SCM logo, you will see a link that says “[Printer Friendly].” Just click on that, and you’ll have a clean printer version.
  • Misc: Finally, you may notice a few little things here and there like the fancy effect on the menu when you collapse it, and a couple of other minor visual changes. Thanks for the input and ideas. Hopefully you’ll enjoy the changes.

If you wouldn’t mind, please “like” how much you like the layout of the newsletter:
