@Kozmo – Thanks for dropping by. You’re totally right brother. It’s critical that we see things from the perspective of our audience. Check out Don’t Be a Magician in the February 2014 issue.

Can it be explained away. Sam the bell Hop in Bill Malone’s hands is not magic, its theater but not magic, its entertaining and that entertainment is its value. But it can be explained away “Man that guys good with a pack of cards, I wouldn’t want to play cards with that guy”…explained away. And most card effects can be explained away with that one statement…..

So the question is, what does it look like from your audiences view…..that’s whats important…not that i know anything….

Can I get an “AMEN!”

@David – I hear ya about the time thing. I’m not sure where my server physically is. That’s the time that’s stamped . . . server time. As for connecting with your audience, I’m not claiming that I’ve mastered it myself. It’s a work in progress for all of us, but the key is that You (or I) are thinking about it and aware that it’s a rampant problem in magic. I’ve reviewed, literally, hundreds of magic DVDs and I’d say 97% of them are filled with crap “presentations.” Sure the effects may be good, clever ideas, but the presentation of them is crap, and the way the audience is treated is crap. Sooooooo frustrating . . .

That’s AM (morning) Heck it’s nearly midnight over here on this side of the globe. This internet thing… makes you forget that you blokes are 1000s of miles (km) away. And isnt it great that we can chat like this no matter where we are placed.

Our craft is about feeling. That’s why I like a story to build up to the trick. Even just a short prequel just to set the stage so to speak. Story build emotional connection to the event and thus the feelings flow from the emotion.

I call this ability to create feeling: “showmanship” The ability to ‘connect’ with your audience of 1 or 10000

@David, I remember seeing Paul Harris do Mondo Nifty Invisible Palm Aces for the first time . . . it was awesome! It felt so good. Some of the stuff on Eric Jones’s Extension of Me DVD set was like that. Beautiful and magical looking.

I had a moment of astonishment and appreciation for the beauty of the effect when i saw it. That was the last time I experienced “that” feeling.

Or maybe you were trying to remember what to write there but actually couldn’t remember what you wrote, because it hadn’t yet been written. 🙂
