Use him as MC for your spontaneous show. Even throw a bit of fake ventriloquism in to the pot, so to speak (sic), so you get to say what you want said. ummmm such as Thank you folks for a loverly evening. This magician is working in town this week and would be happy to consider your offers… blah blah blah. Obviously use a bit more professional line or keep it corny dependent on the ‘feel’ of the show you have created with your impromptu MC. I am all for get attention and RUN with it. You are not always reaching to the people you are talking too. These are normally the plebs of the company. The decision makers are often nearby, just watching and getting impressed at ‘the way you handle’ the encounter with their plebs. (pleb: n. – description of underling, worker, brain dead employee, etc)

hmmm I think this comment should have been more appropriate for the jobs for magicians article – in no stone unturned. Ooops typical of me getting carried away on a different thread…..

@David, You bring up a good point about “going back” to the normal guy. I think Eugene Burger has a good take on this. He talks about giving your show texture. Some effects are just adventures of the props as he calls it. Other effects are serious, others scary, some silly, some casual, some intense, etc. The “normal” guy you refer to could kind of act as MC between effects.

I love to show my audience that most of this stuff is just hog wash (silly nonsense) that some person has tried to “scare” you into believing they have special powers. This leads into similar conversation that makes the audience think I’m about to reveal how a trick is done. Then when the true effect is performed, they are nailed to the floor in a full prostrate bowing (grovelling) movement as they have suddenly become believers in the supernatural and I must be a demi god or something similar. with powers that may turn them into a frog…… Well make not that extreme exhibition of behaviours. But they certainly look at you differently. They “know” you are ‘normal’ but then…are you??? 10 minutes later and after a few bad jokes the spell is broken and you have morphed back to the normal bloke they always knew. But something will forever be in the backs of their minds. Did he do that? or Did he REALLY do that??!!

I agree with Mike, above, simple tricks should be turned into a FULL magical EXPERIENCE.

We would all do well to take more time to “dress up” our magic with better stories/presentation and good theater! Hope to see more of these types of tricks in future issues!
