@Richard – excellent point. I used to close my stand up show with a prediction of the Murderer, Weapon and Room from a game of Clue.

Everyone at one time or another has owned or played Monopoly, so the effect will strike a very primal cord with just about everyone. What I like about the idea is that an impromptu version can be done with just about any board game you might happen to notice that is laying around. All you need is a knowledge of the game, knowing the method for the predictions, paper and pen, and you have a pretty good mental effect to show.

Thanks to both you and Danny

It is ALL magic. Levatations, restorations, vanishes, transitions are all magic tricks. So are predictions, locations and mind reading. I think most reputable Mentalists have some type of disclaimer, I know at least Banachek, Richard Osterlind even Kreskin do. They are telling you flat out that what they are doing is a trick! The terms Mentalism and Mental Magic are interchangeable in my mind, like comparing apples and apples. Is it Mentalism because it is dark and serious, and Mental Magic if its light and funny? No! It makes no difference it is still a magic trick. I think in many cases it is simply a matter of someone who takes themselves way too seriously looking down on other performers. For some reason many Mentalists seem to feel that they are higher on the food chain than a lowly magician. I love ALL magic, and I perform both l magic as well as mentalism, I refer to myself as and Unsualist, I just think it sounds cool and if I am doing my job everything I do should be unusual to the spectator if it be Mental Magic or other wise.

As much as I love to argue/debate a philosophical point, I’m actually not arguing here. I’m genuinely curious what it is that makes a difference.

So the question then becomes . . . how does a brightly colored prop change what type of genre you are performing?

Much of it seems to be a “feeling.” If it can give the impression of magic instead of mindreading, it’s often labeled mind magic.

If it relies on props – especially bright visual props – it’s usually considered mind magic.

There are even some which go so far as to say if the presentation isn’t deadly serious, it’s mind magic.

Of course, the exceptions to these “rules” include Kreskin, Dunninger, and Annemann.

@Chet – Bizarre magic isn’t as “un-cut-and-dried” as mental magic vs. mentalism is in my mind. I’m still very interested in just a simple bullet-point list of the difference. Usually when I ask this question, the response I get is very similar to the one you just gave . . . I could write a book about it . . . but nobody can write a sentence about it . . . very strange. I honestly do not know what people are claiming the difference is, so I can’t even take a side or a stance because I don’t know what the argument is.

Jeffersonian: Give me some time and I may come up with an entire article about the ongoing argument(s) between the terms “mentalism,” “mental magic,” and even “bizarre magic.”
