You are about to enter the world known as The Stone Cold Journal. Very few people have had the honor, and most people who have usually end up a wee bit crazy when it’s all over. So what am I talking about? I’m a big fan of the concept of “write everything down” even if it’s not a fully developed thought. Usually as I write down an idea that pops into my head, it’s a bit random and rambley (I just made that word up), but the idea seems to further develop itself as I write it down. So you [...]

Unpicked

Effect: After working a walk around gig for a spell, you walk up to someone while holding a pack of cards (out of the card case). “Hello sir, how are you doing today? Can I show you something amazing?” He delightfully agrees. “All we need to do is spread through this pack” (spread it face down) “and a card turns over”, (ace of diamonds). The ace is seen to be placed back in the pack face down. “If I place that card back into the pack, all it takes is a moment and the Ace of Diamonds turns face up [...]

This month I played and I mean played with a new twist on the Las Vegas Leaper by Paul Harris.  The version is Shimshi’s 10-13-20. I was never a fan of the Las Vegas Leaper because it seemed pointless to me considering it has no plot to speak of.  Well neither does 10-13-20 however that didn’t stop me from having some real fun with it. Jeffro pointed out that there were two additions by Shimshi.  He felt that one detracted from the effect.  I completely disagree.  There is one point in the effect where you slap the table in front [...]

Taken from Moment’s Notice 3 . . . Inspired by Ed Marlo’s Elevator plot Effect: The magician removes the four Kings from the deck and sets them aside. Two cards are then selected and lost in the deck. Three of the Kings are then fairly placed into three different parts of the pack. The last king is placed on top of the deck. All four Kings instantly rise to the top. One of the Kings is again placed on top of the deck. The other three are placed under the spectator’s hand. The magician waves the deck over the spectator’s [...]

No . . . it’s not a new form of government . . . No . . . it’s not a political ideology . . . No . . . it’s not a bird, plane or superman . . . It’s Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, blogs and Youtube. That’s right folks . . . Social Media. This is likely nothing new to you, but are you using them to their maximum potential. First, I’m going to assume that everyone knows what these sites are. I will make no attempt to explain them if you are unfamiliar. So assuming you know what [...]

Ladies and Gentlemen . . . Thank you for that excellent introduction. My Name is Jeff Stone and what you are about to witness is the miracle that we call mind and memory . . . mind reading as it were. My first experiment will involve this noted pad, your mind sir and this  . . . My . . . um . . . this . . . um . . . I had it a second ago . . . my  . . . Does anyone have a huge permanent marker I can use? I hope you have [...]

Howdy folks . . . in order to fully appreciate this month’s issue of The Saga, you must be familiar with the method of the effect, Doctor. Also, for the record, this effect is an inadvertent reinvention of a Steve Beam effect. When I discovered that it was a duplication, Steve was super cool about it and allowed it to stay published in the Magazine. What a guy! Thanks Steve. So here it is folks . . . The Saga: Doctor, doctor, tie my shoes!  I’ve got a bad case of fat-boy blues. Oh sure, laugh it up.  You think [...]

Quantity vs. Quality. Ah . . . the age-old debate. This month’s issue is simple and short, but is definite food for thought. Many of you may be considering going full time, and many of you mistakenly refer to that as “going pro.” Nothing could be further from the truth. There is a big difference between a full-time magician and a professional magician. The two terms are, by no means, interchangeable. Also, in the world of magic, the term “full-time” doesn’t even really mean “full-time” in most cases. Usually it refers to someone who’s sole income is magic. It does [...]

Thank you Eugene Burger for the inspiration of this article. Not too long ago Eugene Burger lectured at our little clublette here in Salt Lake City. The lecture was amazing. Great magic, great advice, and amazing words of wisdom . . . duh . . . it was Eugene Burger. During the lecture he made the comment that at some point you have to decide if you’re going to “purchase or polish.” It’s beautiful and poetic and just what some of you (including me) needed to hear. What he meant, of course, is that you can keep on buying new [...]

Ace Bandage

Preface: This effect comes directly from my Stone Cold Magic E-Book. I’ve been doing it for nearly 20 years now. It’s a pretty visual effect, and it’s pretty easy to do. What follows is a copy-and-paste right out of the e-book. Before you read it, though, you may want to brush up on the saga story that goes along with this one. It was the very first episode of the saga back in July 2007: Ace Bandage. Effect: Four indifferent cards visually change into the four Aces as they are pushed through the deck. Preparation: Openly remove the four Aces [...]

Let us hearken back to the days of yester-year . . . you know when Ronald McDonald was cool . . . and Grimace was even cooler, but the coolest of all was the Hamburglar. When I was a wee lad, I went to a McDonald’s grand opening where Ronald McDonald, himself, performed a magic show! It was awesome. Although, I can’t remember a single trick from the show. However, I do remember the one trick that he taught us all. It was the vanishing wand. Weird . . . I just suddenly remembered one other trick from the show [...]
